John Eppel
(Zimbabwe, 1947)

Born in South Africa in 1947, John Eppel was raised in Zimbabwe where he still lives, making his home in Bulawayo near the Matopos hills. He is head of the English department at the Christian Brothers College in Bulawayo.
His collections of poetry include Spoils of War (1989), which won the Ingrid Jonker prize, Sonata for Matabeland (1995), and Selected Poems 1996-1995 (2001). He has also written five satirical novels: DG Berry's The Great North Road (1989), winner of the M-net prize 1990, Hatchings (1993), The Giraffe Man (1994), The Curse of the Ripe Tomato (2001) and The Holy Innocents (2002). He is married to Shari Eppel, a poet and human rights activist. They have three children.
